An early 20th century community building in Lithgow has been rebuilt as a 21st century university campus. The transformation of the building into a university facility included the creation of a series of new breakout spaces and courtyards. The significant level differences across the site provided a design challenge to achieve equal access whilst integrating with existing courtyard spaces.
The materials selection for this project were influenced by the hand pressed bricks found on site. A combination of new and salvaged bricks were used throughout the landscape areas.
New fixed furniture is included within each courtyard and has been placed to promote informal group interaction. The design of the courtyards includes tree planting and varied surfaces of paving and turf appropriate for the microclimate.
