Darling Square is a new city neighbourhood on the former site of Sydney’s Entertainment Centre. The site comprises an entirely new public domain on a site dominated for decades by The Entertainment Centre itself and multi-storey car park. ASPECT Studios was engaged by Lendlease after winning the design competition for the new square. ASPECT’s winning competition entry established a strong, people focused vision for the public realm and new community building.
Darling Square will be a vibrant new residential, commercial and mixed-use precinct, home to about 4200 residents and 2000 workers. The precinct will be knitted into the city fabric, surrounded by new and upgraded streets and linked to Ultimo, Haymarket and Chinatown via two new pedestrian laneways with new bars, cafes and restaurants and a generous, 20m wide pedestrian boulevard connecting the Harbour to Haymarket and beyond.
In the centre of the precinct, ASPECT Studios will also deliver Sydney’s newest public square – an active, community focused space bookended by the Darling Exchange building, designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates. The Darling Exchange is a community hub, home to daily fresh food markets, childcare facilities, a new city library and restaurant. Two retail pavilions to the edge of The Square, designed by Archer Office, will further activate the space. The Square will be a truly community-centric space, home for both residents and visitors alike, and create a new active heart in the south of the CBD.
